1. My car got towed…how do I get it back?

Come to the Hercules Police Department and obtain a vehicle release. You must be the listed registered owner with the DMV of the vehicle. You must have a current driver license or bring a person with you with a valid driver license to promise to drive your vehicle. The vehicle must be currently registered with the DMV. If a smog is needed, you must get a moving permit from the DMV to move your vehicle. If your vehicle was towed for expired registration, you must bring in all the DMV paperwork with you for the release. If your vehicle was reported stolen and you have received a call from our police department that your vehicle was located, you will have no fee for the vehicle release service as you are a victim. Vehicle release fee is currently $185.00 (please refer to the Master Fee Schedule to verify the price is current).

2. I need a copy of my police report. What do I need to do?

Come to the Hercules Police Department Administrative Office between the hours of 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Thursday, and complete a report request. The reports are generally available for release within 7-10 days of request, pending approval from the Detective Sergeant.

There are exceptions to this procedure. If the case involves a juvenile, a copy of the report is sent to the Juvenile Judge of Contra Costa County. The Judge makes the determination as to whether the report will be released and notifies the Hercules Police Department of the decision. At that point, typically 7-10 days later, we will notify you of the Judge’s decision.

Cases involving active criminal investigations will not be released until the case has been adjudicated.

3. I got a parking citation that I don’t think is right. How do I contest this?

If you wish to contest a parking citation you must do so in writing. Send a written letter stating your reason(s) for contesting the citation to: Payment Center, P.O. Box 22814, Denver, CO 80222. For additional information, call 510-423-7275.

4. How do I take care of a traffic citation?

After you receive a citation, a copy of the cite is given to you from the officer. You must take care of the cite on or before the date written at the bottom of the cite with the Richmond Superior Court.

If you receive a “fix it ticket” you may come into our police department to get that ticket signed off once the item was fixed on your vehicle. If the Hercules Police issued the cite or if you live in Hercules and that address is on your ID, there will be no fee for the ticket to be signed off by an officer. If you didn’t receive the cite here in Hercules and do not reside in Hercules or can prove that you own a business in Hercules, there will be a $20 fee for the sign off (refer to the Master Fee Schedule to see if the fee may have changed).

5. How do I get a clearance letter?

Come to the Police Department between 8AM-5PM, Monday through Thursday and complete a request. Hercules Police Department records will check for any contacts and/or arrests you may have had within the City. A clearance letter stating the results can me mailed to your home or picked up from the Department, typically within 72 hours. There is a charge for a clearance letter.Please check the Master Fee Schedule for the current fees. 

6. What are your fees for services?

The Hercules Police Department charges a variety of fees for services. Please review the fee schedule for the cost of specific services. 

7. Do I need to make an appointment to get a live scan? How much does it cost?

Appointments are recommended for live scan services. Please call 510-799-8213 to schedule an appointment. The cost for live scan depends on the reason that the service is needed. 

Rolling fee: $35 in addition to any applicable state or federal fees.

Payment must be made immediately after the live scan is conducted. Appointments are made at the Hercules Police Department Administrative Office between the hours of 8 AM and 4 PM.

8. What are the Officer’s phone numbers so I can leave them a message?

Please, call 510-799-8276 or 510-799-8260 and tell the operator whom you wish to leave a message for. The operator then will transfer you to their voicemail.

9. How can I submit a vacation watch?

Obtain and complete a vacation watch form from the Police Department or download and submit this completed form.You can also file a vacation watch thourgh online reporting.

10. How can I find out if a sex offender lives near me?

Visit Megan's Law website. This is on the Attorney General's website.

11. I’m a victim of Identity theft. What should I do?

Report the incident to the police department. You can also report the incident on our online reporting. For identity theft publications click here.

12. How do you get your property back?

Contact the Property Division at (510) 799-8213 and make an appointment to obtain your property. Evidence items may not be released.

13. How do you get your firearm back?

If your firearm is taken by a member of the Hercules Police Department for any reason, you must complete a request form required by the California Department of Justice to have it returned (http://ag.ca.gov/firearms). Upon successful review of your request, you will receive a certificate that allows the Hercules Police Department to release the firearm to you. Contact the Property Division at (510) 799-8213) after receipt of the DOJ certificate, to make an appointment to retrieve your firearm.

14. How do I make a complaint against a police employee? 

Download and mail the completed Citizen Complaint Form. Complaints can also be made verbally, by email,by telephone, or in writing. Complaints should be directed to the Hercules Police Department, 111 Civic Drive, Hercules CA 94547.

15. My car was repossessed. What do I need to do?

Contact your bank or loan company to determine what they require for return of your vehicle. The Hercules Police Department provides a release for repossessed vehicles that is required by the tow company. The charge for this release is currently $15, and it can be obtained at the HPD Administrative Office.

16. I’m thinking about moving to Hercules. I would like to know about the crime statistics for the City. Where do I find these statistics?

17. Animal Control

Animal control and sheltering services are provided through an agreement with the Contra Costa County Animal Service Department. The CCC Animal Services has two animal shelters, one in Martinez and one in Pinole. The department handles lost and found animals, licensing, adoptions and emergency pet services. In addition, they offer numerous field services such as investigating claims of animal cruelty, picking up injured animals, and impounding stray animals.
