Opened in August 2009, the new San Francisco
Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) Park and Ride Facility (also referred to as the Hercules Transit Center) is now located on Willow Avenue near the eastbound Interstate 80 off-ramp. The relocation of the Hercules Transit Center allows for both an expansion of the facility and for the completion of all three phases of the
New Town Center project.
The previous parking lot, located on San Pablo Avenue between Sycamore Avenue and John Muir Parkway, could not be expanded to accommodate commuter demand, so city officials partnered with BART to find an alternative location. With a total of 422 parking spaces, the new Hercules Transit Center lot is 66% larger than the previous facility. Lighting, crosswalks, and pedestrian and bicycle paths are almost complete for easy access and for the safety of commuters using the new facility.
The Redevelopment Agency assumed and then transferred ownership of the previous Park and Ride site on San Pablo Avenue so that the development of the Market Town phase of the New Town Center mixed-use district could commence.
