6/3/20:

Dear Hercules Community:  In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the latest Contra Costa County public health orders, the Hercules Parks and Recreation Department is carefully evaluating and planning new & creative alternatives for our 2020 summer programming!  As soon as we can roll out any new offerings, we will do so with every means of advertising at our disposal (i.e. eBlasts, social media, sign boards, banners, etc).  We appreciate your patience.  Our staff misses you and looks forward to seeing you soon!  If you have any questions, please contact us at (510) 799-8291, Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

5/28/20:

CC Café:  CC Café has been providing meals to seniors that sign up on a weekly basis here in Hercules.  The meal service plan consists of 7 frozen meals, along with a loaf of bread, fruit and a half gallon of milk.  The numbers fluctuate from week to week, but staff have noted the number of seniors registering has steadily increased over the course of time.  On Tuesday, May 19, 45 seniors signed up and received meals.  That number spiked to a high of 62 this past Tuesday, May 26.  CC Café will continue the weekly meal plan for the duration of the Shelter in Place order.  With that said, C.C. Café is planning to modify the weekly meals beginning next week, going from 7 frozen entrees to 5 meals with a loaf of bread, fruit and milk for those seniors that sign up. In order to participate in the CC Café, seniors place food orders with the Senior Center by Friday at Noon, by calling (510) 799-8219, and pick up food every Tuesday at lunch time between 11:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.

Food Bank:  On, Tuesday, May 19, the Contra Costa Food Bank was in Hercules to pass out food to the seniors and others in need.  The Food Bank along with Parks and Rec staff helped the seniors maintain appropriate social distancing during the process. 250 people took advantage of the food distribution.  The Contra Costa Food Bank distributes food at the Hercules Senior Center on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. The next day for food distribution will be June 2.  Here are some photos of the line from May 19.

Senior Outreach Program:  The Senior Center staff has created an activity packet for seniors to help give them some “stay at home activities” to help keep them engaged at home. The first activity packet was distributed on Tuesday, May 26, during the C.C. Café lunch distribution. The packet included 3 mazes, a word search, a crossword puzzle, a word jumble, and 2 coloring sheets. A new activity packet will be created each week and be available for seniors to pick up at the Hercules Senior Center every Tuesday.

Tennis Court update:  The Refugio Valley Tennis Court resurfacing project began on Wednesday, May 6. The project is on track to be completed by mid-June.  Here are a few photos...

5/14/20:

Goodie Bags:

The Preschool staff put together a goodie bag for their students and had them pick these bags up at the Community Swim Center last week.  The goodie bags were filled with things to do including a May lesson plan, complete with arts and crafts projects as well as a Mother’s Day gift project the kids could work on for their mom’s.  For those in the Jr and Pre-Kinder classes, their bags contained a diploma signifying they have completed the class.  Staff also cleaned out their preschool “cubbies” on site, and sent home any clothing/belongings that were left behind.  Families were extremely touched by the gesture, and we received many positive comments, including many about summer programs.  Clearly staff look forward to getting back into the classrooms with their kids!

CC Café:  On Tuesday, May 5, a total of 39 meals were distributed to the Seniors at the senior center. 35 were available for pick up and 4 were delivered. On Tuesday, May, 12, a total of 41 meals were distributed at the Senior Center for pick up.

Food Bank:  On, Tuesday, May 5, the Senior Center saw 245 participants receive free produce and canned goods from the Contra Costa Food Bank in their community produce distribution program. This is up from the 216 people that were served at the April 21, distribution.

The Contra Costa Food Bank distributes food at the Hercules Senior Center on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. The next food bank is Tuesday, May 19, from 11:00 a.m. – 12 p.m.

VIRTUAL RECREATION RESOURCE CENTER:

https://www.ci.hercules.ca.us/government/parks-recreation/herculeshappeningsfromhome

While recreation programs and facilities are closed through at least May 31, due to the shelter in place order for the COVID-19 pandemic, your friends at Hercules Parks and Rec have put together a list of ideas to keep you busy at home during this time.  We hope that everyone remains safe during this closure and we hope to resume programs in the not too distant future.

With that said, the Parks and Recreation Department would like to remind everyone to stay healthy and active.  As our daily lives are filled with more indoor time, there are many things that we can do…

Tennis Courts:  The Refugio Valley Tennis Court resurfacing project began on Wednesday, May 6. The project is anticipated to wrap up mid-June (depending on weather).  Of course the rain this week has not helped the process.  Here are a few photos of the beginning of the project.

4/30/20:

Community Clean-up Day - POSTPONED & RESCHEDULED:  Just a quick reminder that the Community Clean-up day scheduled for the first Saturday of May (5/2) has been postponed due to the Shelter in Place order.  With that said, we have a tentative new date of Saturday, September 19.

The event will be held in the same format running 8:00-11:00 a.m. at the Corp Yard.  This is one of the mandatory events that all City Recognized Nonprofit groups are required to participate. If you or your group are interested in volunteering for the day’s event, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at (510) 799-8228.  More details will be shared about this event as we get closer to the event date.  A Household Hazardous Waste event is being schedule at the Hercules Corp Yard, and slated for June 27.

Resurface Refugio Park Tennis Courts:  The Refugio Park Tennis Courts resurfacing project was approved by Council at the April 14, meeting. The City is working with the contractor to finalize the dates for the project, with an anticipated start date in May.  This project was a Budget Referral from the Council last year.  Staff is looking forward to the project commencing.

Blood Drive:  On Saturday, April 18, the American Red Cross was out on site at the Hercules Senior Center.  25 registered donors gave 21 pints of blood.  That equates to 63 blood products for patients in the hospitals we serve. The next drive is June 23, 2020.

Senior Outreach program:  Staff has been working on a concentrated Senior Outreach Program to our Senior Center membership.  The outreach program will consist of a baseline “check-in” with each member, as well as a discussion about how they are doing, and what their potential needs are (if any).  Based on the assessment, staff will work to connect them with resources and support.  In addition, staff have reached out to both nonprofit groups (Friends of the Senior Center and the Senior Citizen’s Club of Hercules) for their assistance in contacting the entire membership.  Activity Kits are being put together and will eventually go up on our Virtual Recreation page on the City website.  Look for more information in our next bi-weekly edition.

Food Bank:  The Contra Costa Food Bank was in Hercules on Tuesday, April 21, to pass out food to the seniors and others in need.  The Food Bank along with Parks and Rec staff helped the seniors maintain appropriate social distancing to conform to the order placed by the Governor.  216 people were served during this most recent food distribution.

The Contra Costa Food Bank distributes food at the Hercules Senior Center on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. The next day for food distribution will be May 5.

4/16/20:

A little over a month ago, Contra Costa County joined other Bay Areas counties in issuing a shelter in place order.  As of today, the modeling we’ve seen shows that the curve is flattening and our efforts to stay home and save lives have slowed the spread of COVID-19.  With that said, we are not out of the woods yet. We must continue to do everything we can to protect those most vulnerable.

All recreation programs and facilities have been cancelled through at least May 3, due to the shelter in place order for the COVID-19 pandemic.  In addition, the City of Hercules has closed all basketball and tennis courts, all playgrounds, public picnic areas and the dog park.  We hope that everyone remains safe during this closure and we hope to resume programs in the not too distant future.

Rec Expo Week – POSTPONED:  The Rec Expo Week scheduled for next week, April 20–23, has been postponed due to the Shelter in Place order and the uncertainty of when and how it will be lifted.  There is no new date for the Rec Expo at this time, but once it has been made clear from the State and County, we will reschedule the Rec Expo with the opportunity to receive a 10% discount on eligible camps, classes and programs.

We will give all of our participants as much advanced notice on the new date using all of our communication tools including posting on the City Webpage, eBlasts, Facebook and Social Media posts, signboards, and more.  We apologize for any inconvenience, and we look forward to seeing you all again in the near future.

Belly Flops with Cops – CANCELED:  We have officially canceled the Belly Flops with Cops event for this year.  The Belly Flops with Cops event was slated for Saturday, April 25, at the Community Swim Center.  This FREE event to the public is one that really kicks off the summer programs.  With the Shelter in Place orders and the uncertainty of when or how it will be lifted, it made sense to cancel this event for the 2020 year.  We hope to be able to bring this back next year.

Community Clean-up Day - POSTPONED & RESCHEDULED:  Community Clean-up day has traditionally been held the first Saturday of May annually.  Because of the Shelter in Place order, this year’s event scheduled for Saturday, May, 2, 2020, has been postponed.  The new date will be Saturday, September 12, unless there is some unforeseen issues that come up between now and then.  The event will be held in the same format running 8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. at the Corp Yard.

Virtual Classes

The Senior Center continues to connect with seniors through virtual programming. The Hula class meets online on Mondays and had 16 participants this week. The Line Dance class meets on Mondays and Thursdays. There were 23 participants each class this week.

Food Bank

On Tuesday, April 7, the Contra Costa Food Bank was in Hercules to pass out food to the seniors and others in need.  The Food Bank along with Parks and Rec staff helped the seniors maintain appropriate social distancing to conform to the order placed by the Governor.  Approximately 150 people took advantage of the food distribution.  The Contra Costa Food Bank distributes food at the Hercules Senior Center on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. The next day for food distribution will be April 21.

CC Café

The Senior Center has adapted to the “current” norm, with CC Café providing 7 frozen meals along with a loaf of bread, some fruit and a half gallon of milk.  For those participating in the CC Café, seniors place food orders with the Senior Center by Friday at Noon, by calling (510) 799-8219, and pick up food every Tuesday at lunch time between 11:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.  The CC Café will continue this process for the duration of the Shelter in Place order.  The numbers fluctuate weekly, but we are currently serving about 34 seniors each week.

3/31/20:

The City of Hercules has officially closed all basketball and tennis courts, all playgrounds and the dog park while the shelter in place order for the COVID-19 pandemic is in place.  For the safety of everyone, please continue to wash your hands thoroughly, don’t touch your face, and maintain the appropriate physical distancing of at least six feet.  Stay safe, stay health

The City of Hercules Parks and Recreation Department has set up a Virtual Recreation page on the City’s website to share ideas of things to do while we are all helping to flatten the curve.  The Virtual Recreation page is a resource center with ideas and tips for all ages.  We will continue to update the Virtual Recreation Resource Center on a regular basis. As our daily lives are filled with more indoor time, there are many things that we can do to help us stay healthy and stay active.  Please visit us at…

3/16/20:

As of Tuesday, March 17, CC Café will begin a new 7 day meal plan.  When seniors arrived to pick up lunch tomorrow, Tuesday, March 17, they will be given 7 frozen meals that the seniors will need to take home as they shelter in place per order.  Next week CC Café plans to do the same thing.  Seniors will place food orders with the Senior Center by Friday at Noon, by calling (510) 799-8219, and delivery will be every Tuesday.  Next meal delivery will be on Tuesday, March 24.  This process will continue until otherwise stated.

3/13/20:

In keeping with the guidelines from the State of California and the Contra Costa County Health Services regarding non-essential events, meetings, or gatherings during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the City of Hercules Parks and Recreation Department has cancelled all upcoming events, recreation programs, and aquatic programs through Tuesday, March 31st.  The City will re-evaluate the situation at that time and extend cancellations if needed.  Household credits and/or refunds will be issued for all missed programs.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but also appreciate your understanding.  Our goal is to do everything we can to ensure the safety of the public during this health crisis.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call (510) 799-8291 during regular business hours.
